Internet inventions that come from the US
This absolutely ancient technology was invented in 1971, decades before Google and AOL. We have Ray Tomlison to thank for its invention: it was he who sent the first message from one computer to another.
Netscape Navigator
The first truly popular browser was not IE but Netscape Navigator, based on Mosaic, which was, in turn, co-written by Marc Andreessen, who worked at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois.
Social Media
Social Media truly changed everything. Previously, the internet consisted of thousands of forums and personal pages. Chris Hughes, who co-founded Facebook with Mark Zuckerberg, coined the term itself. Now, Facebook has become a force to be reckoned with.
The Cloud
Cloud computing was a new idea in 2006 when American tech executive Eric Schmidt first uttered the phrase. Now it seems that everything is “in the cloud.” But first to come up with the idea was J.C.R. Licklider, also an American, who had a vision of an interconnected web in the 1960s.
eCommerce
Did Jeff Bezos invent online shopping? Not quite: we can thank Michael Aldrich, who is from England, for that. But when we think “shopping,” we think Amazon.
We are truly helpless without Google. While not the first search engine (that title goes to Archie, created by Alan Emtage from Canada), it’s by far the most popular one. In 2023, Google rules the web not only as a search engine but also as one of the most prominent tech giants in the world.
